Wildlife Conservation: From Georgia’s Piedmont into the Appalachians will take place on Thursday, December 4th at the Scholars Event Theater (Price Gilbert Library, Room 1280) on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology. This exploratory conference is focused on bringing together academics, policy makers, and members of the nonprofit sector who are actively working on wildlife conservation efforts with the goal of identifying crucial gaps in knowledge and research where we can best place our efforts. The culmination of these discussions will be the drafting of a white paper that identifies the key strengths in wildlife monitoring and conservation as well as potential strategies for building and maintaining the community going forward. All food and beverages will be provided. Some travel stipends can be provided if needed. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at tressa.watson@gatech.edu and jmcguire@gatech.edu.
Prior to the conference, we encourage you to consider a few questions to facilitate discussions that will culminate in a white paper:
- What is happening? What are some ongoing wildlife initiatives in the Southeast? What type of baseline data do we collect/rely upon (e.g., occurrences)? How does this data impact our understanding of wildlife (e.g., distribution, adaptability) to improve conservation effectiveness?
- What are the limitations? Are there gaps in data and monitoring necessary for understanding how wildlife are responding to ever-changing landscape dynamics? What are bottlenecks for data processing and management?
- What are some solutions? How can we improve data availability and sharing to improve wildlife monitoring? What needs to be done to implement effective wildlife protection? How does wildlife conservation interface with social justice initiatives?
